POSITION SUMMARY:

The Omineca Arts Centre is seeking a creative, organized, and community-minded Art Curator to develop and coordinate exhibitions that showcase local, regional, and visiting artists. Working collaboratively with staff, artists, volunteers, and community partners, the Art Curator will help shape a dynamic exhibition program that reflects the Centre's commitment to artistic excellence, accessibility, and community engagement.

This position offers flexible hours, to be negotiated based on project and exhibition schedules. Compensation: $20 to $30 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Exhibition Development and Curation

• Develop, plan, and curate exhibitions that align with the Centre's vision and strategic priorities.

• Research artists, themes, and emerging trends to inform exhibition programming.

• Coordinate artist calls, selection processes, and exhibition schedules with the Manager and curatorial committee.

• Prepare exhibition proposals, curatorial statements, and interpretive materials.

Artist Relations

• Build and maintain positive relationships with artists, collectives, and cultural organizations.

• Serve as the primary point of contact for exhibiting artists.

• Support artists throughout the exhibition process, including applications, proposals, installation, promotion, and public engagement activities.

Gallery and Exhibition Management

• Coordinate exhibition installation and deinstallation logistics.

• Ensure artwork is handled, displayed, and documented according to professional standards.

• Maintain accurate records of exhibited works, artist agreements, and exhibition archives.

• Assist in developing exhibition budgets, tracking related expenses and generating regular reports.

Community Engagement and Public Programming

• Coordinate artist talks, workshops, panels, and other public engagement opportunities connected to exhibitions.

• Foster connections between artists and the broader community.

• Support initiatives that increase accessibility and audience participation.

Marketing and Promotion

• Collaborate with staff and volunteers to promote exhibitions through social media, newsletters, press releases, and community outreach.

• Contribute content for marketing materials, exhibition documentation, and website updates.

• Support efforts to increase attendance and community awareness of exhibitions and events.

Partnership Development

• Assist in establishing and maintaining partnerships with galleries, educational institutions, Indigenous organizations, cultural groups, and community stakeholders.

• Identify opportunities for collaborative exhibitions and special projects.

Other Duties

• Support special events, fundraisers, and programming initiatives related to the Centre's artistic mandate.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager. (Directed by the Board of Directors in the absence of a Manager.)

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

• Education or experience in visual arts, art history, museum studies, arts administration, cultural programming, or a related field.

• Previous experience curating exhibitions, coordinating arts programming, or working in a gallery, museum, or community arts setting is preferred.

• Strong organizational and project-management skills.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively with artists, staff, volunteers, and community partners.

• Knowledge of contemporary and community arts practices.

• Experience with exhibition installation and artwork handling is an asset.

• Proficiency in MS Office, Google Workspace, and virtual platforms like Zoom.

• Basic graphic design and social media management skills are an asset.

• Demonstrates cultural competence, sensitivity, humility, and the ability to foster inclusive, safe environments.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Flexible hours based on exhibition schedules, programming needs, and special events.

• Primary work will be at the Omineca Arts Centre in downtown Prince George, with occasional off-site work for exhibitions, meetings, and community events.

• Some evening and weekend availability may be required for exhibition openings and public programs.

• Light to moderate physical activity may be required, including lifting up to 30 lbs., hanging artwork, and preparing gallery spaces.
