Lyle Bats is the brand-new musical projection of Williams Lake, B.C.’s Brent Morton, whose former persona was that of two inanimate objects: the Drum & Bell Tower (kinda weird, right?). Having exhausted the edifice of his former project to the point of structural defect, Brent has shoulder-tapped Lyle to stand in for him as a fully human projection: like, less façade and more face. Lyle was game: arm-twisting was not necessary.

Lyle’s new batch of songs have taken Brent in a new direction. Moving away from Brent’s “think I’ll read up on social and ecological injustices and funnel my rage into songwriting” approach, Lyle makes use of themes a little closer to home—the life Brent actually leads. These songs are less commentary and more confession; less pointing-out and more introspection; less rage and more love; less rallying-cry and more…crying (just kidding…sort of). It should be noted that Lyle does (currently…) have Brent’s permission to play these songs.

Written in a matter of flow-filled weeks in the summer and early fall of 2018, these songs are honest reflections on relationship, on struggle, on change, on knowing oneself, on other things. They are, in fact, so honest that they might even cross into the territory of “the vulnerable” (gasp!). Recently, Brent has begun forming these pieces into audio sculpture, to be released future-wise. In the meantime, Lyle seeks the opportunity to hone these pieces by sounding them into your kind ears.

Also sharing the bill is The Alkemist, a one-man band/psychedelic folk project created by Jay Myers in 2015. This is the last PG show The Alkemist will be playing for a good long while, as Jay and his wife are expecting their first child and will temporarily be relocating to Haida Gwaii for the remainder of 2019. Many thanks to the PG crew for supporting this project over the past few years!
