Andrea Fredeen moved with her family from Saskatchewan to PG in 1991. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University and the University of Northern British Columbia in 2014 where she discovered how much writing informed her painting. She was moved to pursue a Master of Arts in English, with a creative thesis that involved using the two narrative forms of visual art and creative writing to tell a version of the same story. Andrea has shown work in solo exhibitions in Prince George and Smithers, as well as been in juried group exhibitions with Two Rivers Gallery (Prince George), the Federation of Canadian Artists (Kelowna), and the Prince George Citizen’s 100th anniversary project. Andrea curated a group exhibition of BFA Alumni and was a recipient of a scholarship with the Toni Onley Artist Project in Wells, BC (2014). The Canadian Cancer Society has her work installed in the Kordyban Lodge. In 2018, Andrea was part of the Healing Arts Project with the Prince George and District Community Arts Council, which involved being a co-facilitator of art programs with Activators Society and Big Brothers and Big Sisters while contributing to the development of art programs for seniors. Andrea was a key board member of the Omineca Arts Centre where she led the development of the first edition of its strategic plan/policy and procedures manual. She retired from her physiotherapy career in 2018 and to continue with her artistic development, paint in her home studio and teach painting workshops within the community.

You will find that Andrea's current work looks beyond what a space means to her personally as she listens to the stories of the landscapes, animals, and people that she paints. She gets to know her subjects and the space they occupy to try and come to even a brief understanding of what part of their story might be. This project incorporates these stories into paintings and the ideas around written and visual art working together to bring further meaning as she continues with her exploration of storytelling.
